The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a specialized agency of the UN, established Document 9303 to standardize Machine Readable Travel Documents (MRTDs). Without this global standard, a passport printed in Japan wouldn't be readable by an E-Gate in France.

The Biometric Anchor Points

ICAO compliance dictates that a photograph is not just a picture, but a geometric map. The system relies on fixed anchor points: the center of the pupils, the tip of the nose, and the corners of the mouth. The algorithm calculates the distance and angles between these points to generate a unique mathematical hash of your face.

Why 35x45mm?

The 35x45mm dimension (with the face taking up 70-80% of the vertical space) was deemed the optimal ratio to capture the necessary facial real estate for the anchor points without wasting database storage on background pixels.
