Permanent vs. Temporary
A passport photo must reflect your current, everyday appearance. If you receive a permanent facial tattoo, a massive surgical scar, or a highly visible birthmark changes significantly, your biometric baseline has fundamentally shifted.
When to Renew
Minor changes (growing a beard, dyeing your hair, or gaining/losing moderate weight) do not require a new passport. However, significant facial trauma or cosmetic surgery that alters the shape of your jaw, nose, or cheekbones explicitly requires you to apply for a new passport, as the E-Gates will fail to match your new geometry.
Never Use Concealer for Scars
Do not use heavy makeup to completely hide a permanent facial scar for your photo. If the border agent sees a massive scar that doesn't exist on your biometric chip, it will trigger an immediate secondary screening.
