How to Take a Baby Passport Photo at Home Stress-Free

The Challenge of Infant Photography

Taking a compliant passport photo of a squirming newborn or an uncooperative toddler is notoriously difficult. Photo studios are often stressful, making the child cry. That is why taking the photo at home using natural lighting and your smartphone is strictly the best route.

The 'White Sheet' Technique

Lay a plain white sheet or blanket on a bed or the floor, near a bright window (avoiding direct, harsh sunbeams to prevent squinting). Lay the baby gently on their back. If their head shakes too much, place rolled-up towels underneath the sheet on either side of their neck to gently restrict movement. Take the photograph from directly above.

No Pacifiers, No Hands

The biggest reason infant photos are rejected is because a parent's hand or arm is visible in the frame supporting the baby. The frame must strictly only contain the baby. Additionally, no pacifiers, toys, or colorful bibs can be visible.

Are Closed Eyes Allowed?

Government authorities are extraordinarily lenient with newborns (under 6 months). Partial or full eye closure is usually tolerated. However, children older than one year must have their eyes visibly open, facing the camera lens directly.
