Accommodating Mobility Aids

For applicants in wheelchairs, the photo should be taken against a white background draped over the back of the chair if necessary. The most important factor is that the head and shoulders remain the primary focus.

Medical Exemptions

If a medical condition (such as Parkinson's or stroke recovery) makes it impossible to maintain a perfectly neutral expression or keep the head still, a doctor's letter should be included with the application. Consulates are generally accommodating if documentation is provided.

Glasses and Oxygen Tubes

While glasses are generally banned (especially in the US), they may be allowed if they cannot be removed for medical reasons. Oxygen tubes are permitted if they are medically necessary for the applicant at all times.
